Ok so I haven’t played a ton, it’s a new hobby. My swing is very ugly but i can drive straight. I am still working on a better iron game and if i didn’t rush so much I would have great putts. We play a course with a front 9, back 9 and third 12. I average 82 to 86 on 18 holes. I know I am over par of course, but I wondered if I kept playing and improving where I could go with my game? I play for fun, but I am in college and I am transferring to a University next year and hoped to maybe try out for the golf team. (Side note- I am a back to schooler – I am 31)

I will be getting some tips from a golf pro soon, but wondered if anyone has any good thoughts….

Thanks!
Thanks for the site – I already went and registered….
i know to keep working & practice – Plan to it is fun, just wondering if my score is average or bad or if I would have any shot trying for a team or what I can do with my game as I keep working harder and harder….???????

How can i improve my overall golf game? Is there any tips on lowering my handicap that you could share?

Golf Tips to Help the Beginning Golfer
imageThe sport of golf has been with us for thousands of years. People from every corner of the world have enjoyed the tranquility of a few hours spent out on the golf course. The apparent simplicity of playing the game has fooled many people. It is easy to forget the sportsmanship that is involved in the game as you watch someone who plays the game well. Hitting the ball is not as easy as it seems, as so many people who don’t play seem to think. To become good at golf, you will have to put in a lot of hours practicing. There are no two ways about it. A good understanding of how the whole body is involved in a golf swing is important, also. If you are brand new to the game, the following tips can help your game get off to the right start.

Golf Tip Practice For A Better Scorecard
imageEvery golfer is looking for a way to better their game, and trying to improve their swing through trial and error make it a frustrating game. The majority of new golfers are self-taught, and until they take the game up seriously, it is an uphill battle trying to even learn the basics of the golf swing. So how does the new golfer find a short cut for a better game, without taking the fairways apart in frustration?

In learning a new challenge, you have to take one small step at a time. Start off with the smaller steps, or goals, and slowly working towards the bigger goals. The game of golf has a short, medium and big swing. Once you learn the short swing and game, work your way up to the big swing and game. Golf is all in finding the feel of your golf swing. This golf tip will surely improve anyone’s game, once they find the balance and feel of a pendulum golf swing in motion. The following golf practice tip will help you understand the golf swing and what it takes to make it work effectively.

Place yourself around a green or a target with a 7 iron, pitching wedge and approximately 10 to 15 golf balls. If you are on a practice range, try and find an obstacle to go over during the practice. It will boost your confidence on the golf course. Step away from the golf balls and practice short swings with your feet together glancing at your attended target. Do not attempt to hit a golf ball until you feel comfortable with your short swing. If you must, hit one golf ball with your desired club to find and feel the distance for your attended target. Use very little wrist action on the take-away and follow through creating a v shape with the arms. Try to find and feel the pendulum motion of the golf club by grazing the grass, as you swing away glancing at the attended target.

Your goal is to find and feel the pendulum motion of the golf club making contact with the ball with your feet together. You will notice how your upper portion of the body will automatically coil on it’s own, and you lower body will move in unison with your upper body. Once you find the pendulum feeling of the golf club and swing, take a bigger swing. Gradually learn to sweep the grass with a quarter, half, three quarter and a full swing. You will notice yourself losing balance as you take fuller swings, and have to gradually move your feet apart until you find a balanced comfort zone.

With enough practice and effort, your golf score will improve dramatically with the knowledge of what it takes to make a ball bounce off the face of a golf club with a pendulum motion of the golf swing, once you find the balance and feel of a short swing and game. Practicing this golf tip frequently will also help in choosing the right club and swing, for distance in your short game.

Beginner Golf Tips – How to Learn to Play Golf

imageAs you are starting to play the great game of golf, everybody and their brother will be attempting to give you beginner golf tips. Trust me I mean everyone. This includes the guys that you are playing with that cannot break 100 themselves! They will become David Leadbetter or Butch Harmon in their own mind of all places right there on the golf course.

You will quickly learn that there is a time and a place to work on your game. The golf course is where you should play and not practice. Work through all of your beginner golf tips while you are practicing on the driving range, short game area or practice putting green.

So with everyone throwing all of these free beginner golf tips at you, how do you know what to trust? Well, I can tell you that I do not ask my fellow golfers about legal or accounting advice. Through golf books, golf DVDs and local golf instruction, there are many credible and qualified sources for you to tap.

Here are two beginner golf tips from Brad Myers who teaches at The Massengale Golf Academy in Houston, Texas:

Beginner golf tips: Short Game

Opposed to popular belief and actions, if you want to learn how to play the game of golf or if you have played for a long time and want to lower your handicap, learn how to chip and putt. It may not seem as macho or as sexy to learn all of these little short shots as opposed to standing on the driving range banging out long shots. No matter what your current handicap is, if you want to lower your golf scores learn all aspects of the short game. This will drop your scores faster than standing on a driving range for a long period of time week after week.

Here is a question that may put how important the short game is and can help put it into perspective for you. Once your round is finished, do you want to give your buddy a hard time about the one drive you hit past him/her or do you want to brag about the lower score that you shot? Speaking from experience, the ribbing about how your buddy hit one past you is pretty short-lived as he is paying you for winning the bet of lowest score.

One last thought about the short game for you is to make sure you arrive early enough to spend some time on the putting green putting and chipping before your round. You do not need to spend thirty minutes there. You just need to hit enough putts and chip shots to get a good feeling going prior to your round.

Beginner golf tips: Have fun

Unfortunately, most people will tell you that they play the game for fun or to relax but their actions simply do not say the same thing. Especially while you are learning the game, you should set little goals for your rounds or practice time. Sometimes they are not even to do anything with golf. You simply cannot concentrate for four to five hours straight. Maybe it is to play with certain people to enjoy their company or maybe you try to identify different birds or wildlife. Remember it is to be fun for you!

Using these beginner golf tips will help you reach your playing goals and fun goals!
