Sometime back I wrote an article about golf courses in and around Orlando, Florida. Orlando is truly a golfer’s paradise and it was not possible for me to do justice to the subject in one short article, so here are some more great golf courses that you should consider visiting when you take your next vacation in Central Florida. I’ll start off with a golf course that was voted the number one public course in Orlando Magazine. It is the Metro West Golf Club located two miles from Universal Orlando resort. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and is beautifully landscaped with native trees and dotted with spring-fed lakes. The course has won many awards and includes a variety of amenities such as: complimentary shuttle service to selected hotels, a refreshment cart, complimentary valet parking and bag drop, Parview GPS on the golf carts, a Westerly’s Restaurant and more. To schedule a Tee Time call their golf shop at 407-299-1099. Another beautiful public golf course worthy of your attention is Hunter’s Creek. This course features spacious fairways surrounded by tall pine trees and is set among 13 lakes. Hunter’s Creek is located less than 20 minutes away from the Orlando International Airport and the Disney resorts. The course has five sets of tees ranging from 5,225 to a challenging 7,268 yards. Hunter’s Creek has garnered awards and has been the home of several major tournaments including the US Open Qualifier in the years 1989-1994. For more information you can contact the course at: Hunter’s Creek Golf Club, 14401 Sports Club Way Orlando, FL 32837 Phone: 407.240.4653 If you would like a site that combines the flavor of Orlando with a taste of Scotland then the Eagle Creek Golf Club is worth a visit. It earned a 4.5 star rating from the Golf Digest’s places to play program, and when you consider its styling and amenities you can understand why. The course was designed by Ron Garl of the U.S. and Howard Swan of Europe and features 90 bunkers and bulkheads similar to those found on courses in Scotland and England. In addition, the course features a spectacular 14,000 square foot clubhouse with a fully stocked pro shop, a 120 seat restaurant and locker rooms and showers for men and women. For more information contact them at 10350 Emerson Lake Boulevard, Orlando, Florida 32832, Phone: 407-273-4653, Toll-free: 1-866-324-5342, E-mail: info@eaglecreekgolf.info Finally, if you are searching for a course that combines scenic beauty with a challenge to your golf skills then the Lake Orlando Course may be what you are looking for. The scenic beauty on this Lloyd Clifton-designed course is provided by views of lakes, wildlife and towering Cypress trees, and the challenge comes in handling the tight fairways and water on every hole. The course is located at 4224 Club House Road Orlando and you can contact them at: Toll Free:1-866-465-3675 , Tel: (407) 298-1230 Fax: (407) 298-9896 or by email: info@golflakeorlando.com These are just a select few of the many courses in the greater Orlando area. So remember, when you are planning a vacation in Orlando for your family, be sure to take your golf clubs along and take some time to play on the stunning golf courses of this region

There have been fewer causes for celebration this year than in any other since World War II: By mid-October, just 33 new 18-hole courses had opened in the United States. Compare that with 398 in 2000. And course openings outside the U.S. are only slightly more common.

On the bright side, the Class of 2009 can hold its own against the crop of debutantes in most other years, with a solid offering of mostly affordable seaside and mountain layouts.

Best New Course of the Year :

 1. French Lick Resort (Pete Dye Course) French Lick, Indiana 8,102 yards, par 72 Green Fees: $350 888-936-9360

Never has a winner of our Best New Course honors so polarized our panelists as the Pete Dye course at French Lick. The staggering yardage — and equally staggering price tag — has sparked considerable opposition.

Take the closing trio of holes, for example: a 301-yard par-3, followed by a 518-yard par-4, and then a 657-yard par-5. For all that, there are compensations for savvy golfers: shorter tees to choose from, golf packages, and mandatory forecaddies to guide you through the challenges.

2. Waldorf Astoria Golf Club Orlando, Fla. 7,113 yards, par 72 Green Fees: $75-$185 407-597-3783

A heavy hitter in the hospitality industry delivers its first golf course — and it’s an impeccable complement to the brand. Rees Jones sculpted a superb resort golf course — not terribly demanding but with gigantic bunkers and water in play for nearly the entire back nine. It’s all the Florida golf you’d want when the wind blows.

3. Sequoyah National Golf Club Cherokee, N.C. 6,602 yards, par 72 Green Fees: $65-$110 828-497-3000

Robert Trent Jones II carved this short, hilly layout in the steep foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains as an amenity for Harrah’s Cherokee Hotel & Casino, 45 minutes west of Asheville. It’s spectacular throughout, but stray off the tee and you’ll have a better chance of beating the casino than you will of making par.

4. Wine Valley Golf Club Walla Walla, Wash. 7,360 yards, par 72 Green Fees: $45-$90 877-333-9842

Southeastern Washington has never been a golf hotbed, but architect Dan Hixson’s effort in the state’s desert-like wine region may change that. The massive bunkers that melt into the terrain dominate the design, but the endless vistas of the Blue Mountains and swaying wheatgrass rough will linger long after you’ve returned to civilization.

5. Ritz-Carlton GC, Dove Mountain (Saguaro/Tortolita) Marana, Ariz. 7,849 yards, par 72 Green Fees: $80-$225 520-572-3500

Home to the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, Jack Nicklaus’ brawny romp through the desert sports vast fairways, but its defenses rely on forced carries over desert washes, enormous bunkers and wildly sloping greens. The resort’s third nine of a planned four, Wild Burro, is Jack’s favorite, but start with the tournament nines, then catch your breath.

Golf courses each have a character of there own. Here in Southwest Florida I have 8 different courses within 5 miles of my residence. I have played all of them at one time or another. During what we locals call season (winter months) many are members only but come the first of June you can play on all of them at greatly reduced prices.

If you live in Florida for more than a couple years you will find that the heat of summer really does not bother you, especially here near the coast where we enjoy an afternoon sea breeze off the Gulf of Mexico each day. If the heat does bother you we have a lighted course that your can play on until 10:00. However I suggest you bring a good set of eyes with you preferably young eyes to follow the flight of the ball, especially if your ball lands on the edge of the fairway.

Many of my friends are addicted golf fanatics that will play everyday come rain or shine. Afternoon thunderstorms are an everyday threat on all our courses. Golf courses that feature carts with a good wide and long roofs will do double duty by keeping the blazing hot sun off you and keep your gear dry during afternoon thunderstorms.

Golf courses with water hazards can be interesting during June when the gators are mating. Most golf courses have the number of the local alligator trapper on speed dial at this time of the year. It is advisable to never wade into a golf course pond to retrieve a ball. Alligators are very deceptive by appearing to be slow moving but can accelerate to capture prey at incredible speeds. We have had several attacks in our area over the past ten years so you need to give gators a wide birth. In the past we used to have a good supply of rattlesnakes but due to urbanization and increasing numbers of wild hogs they are now seldom seen.

Hogs on a golf course are a disaster waiting to happen. In just one night your favorite course can have thousands of dollars worth of damage. This is especially true if they do their rooting on greens. Golfers are very picky about the golf course they want to play on and especially critical of any changes to the greens. Hog control and removal is a high priority effort around most golf courses.

There are many quality golf courses located here in Southwest Florida. In fact you could easily play a different course for each day of the month and not have to travel more than 20 minutes from your home. There are to many to name and more are being built all the time. Southwest Florida has at least one golf course to suit you and your playing style.
