Unless you can’t even get off the tee, drastically reduce or in some cases, eliminate time spending pounding balls and more time practicing your short game.
Have a plan of attack every time you go practice. Don’t aimlessly get a large bucket of balls and hit drive after drive… the key is to practice the weaknesses in your game. For most people, that is the short game.
Spend more time putting and chipping and less time hitting buckets of balls off the range. Concentrate on weaknesses and you will lower your handicap, guaranteed. Good luck!
Dan D 02.26.10 @ 3:43 pmIn your stance move back keeping the club behind the ball, By reaching you generate substantial power.
Nike VR 02.26.10 @ 4:21 pmim also 15, but i play off 2.
when i started last year i was off 23, and all i worked on was chipping. Im not even a great putter, but never the less, putting is the most important part. with an ability to place the ball close everytime, with your short irons and chipping, combined with a better than average putting game, you will be a great golfer. learn the following things to become a better golfer (imo)
1. learn how to hit fairways off the tee.
2. learn how to stop the ball and spin it with tight pin positions or a green where you need to stop it quickly.
3. learn to 2 putt every hole (maximum), along with hitting 90% of gir with your short iron shots and pitches.
4. work on your short game and learn to be versatile – such as practising trouble shots from in the trees and bunkers.
5. have a mini putting green in your room, and practise regularly.
6. have fun and enjoy the game.
do these, and you will become good. i got myself down to 2 in a year, with a lot of practise.
good luck
GC 02.26.10 @ 4:50 pmEvery part of your routine in driving, chipping and putting needs to be consistent. That only comes with practice and patience. My biggest problem seems that I can’t forget that bad shot that I made on the last hole. Mentally being tough enough to know to let a mistake go and understanding to not let it happen again. Most of all remember to try and have fun with it.
kevin c 02.26.10 @ 5:29 pmThe first place I would advise concentrating on would be Short game…..Anything 100 yds into and including the hole….Primary concentration on putting……. I know its not as showy as 300 yd drives……but in all honesty it is where most golfers lose the most strokes at.
wbaker777 02.26.10 @ 6:14 pmmy son has just turned 13 and plays off 19 but he shoots nett 63’s and 65’s almost all the time. First find out which part of your game is the weakest (by recording on every hole, shots to the green and number of putts) and work on improving it, set yourself goals and focus on achieving them….desire goes along way in this world. my sons long game was his weakness and after he took his shots to the green down from 56 to 49-51, he’s knocked 5 strokes off his score. You should have the distance to hit most greens in regulation, so there is no reason with a bit of work that you can’t be a low single figure handicapper. my sons aiming 2 be a 3 handicapper by the time he’s your age………good luck………
PATRICK T 02.26.10 @ 6:34 pmThe general theme the answers above mine are accurate. Short game and putting refinements will lower your handicap. But, to help your overall game, you need to start thinking proactively vs. re-actively. Have a game plan and try to put yourself in the best positions that suit your game. Are you very accurate with your wedge from 100 yards out? Try to put yourself in position with that club as much as possible. Avoid big numbers. Play smart golf.
golfdiehard 02.26.10 @ 7:55 pmIf you have a handicap. I suggest therapy.
Mike E 02.26.10 @ 11:14 pmI dropped my round average by 8 strokes putting. Eliminate 3 putts altogether, then focus on 100yds and in.
Took awhile to find the putter that felt right for me.
Shaun 02.27.10 @ 12:05 amhit the range, get as much practice as possible, you must improve your game by trying different things, can i suggest that you change your grip slightly to allow different ball flights, also improve your short game at the same time, you don’t want to get too good at getting near the green but be really bad around them, spend around 2 hours on the range and 1 hour on or around the putting green
