There are various online services that will compute a certified handicap. Handicap is calculated based on your last 20 scores. For each score you must subtract the course rating from the actual score and multiply the result by 113 divided by the slope for the course you played. This number is called the differential. Then you take the lowest 10 differentials out of the last 20 scores, divide by 10 and multiply by 96%. This result is your USGA handicap index. Then you take this index and you can convert it to your handicap for a particular course based on the slope for that course. This is easiest figured out by looking at a chart in your golf club’s pro shop. The USGA handicap index is the portable number upon which a particular course handicap is determined. I know it sounds complicated….but IT IS!!!!! http://www.usga.org will tell you how to get the certified handicap.

Figuring out your handicap can be difficult. I would start with an online calculator that will assist you in finding your handicap. You will need the scores of your last 20 outings. From that they take your best 10 scores and calculate the differential, using the slope and rating of each course and set of tees. Then they average the differentials and multiply by .96 to arrive at an adjusted differential. Then they lop off the decimal and there you have your handicap.

Check out this page for a more detailed explanation and calculator, http://www.GolfFoundations.com/handicap.asp.
