if you want a handicap just join some type of golf organization such as a golf course. and if you want to know how if works, they take the last 20 rounds you have played. they throw out the worst two. and tournament scores are weighted more than regualar rounds. its really hard to do it by yourself because a real handicap takes the course difficulty into factor. if you shoot 72 at an easy course and 72 at a hard course the hard course will be more weighted. for example if you shot 72 your last 20 rounds all at an easy course your handicap will still not be a 0 because the course is easy. it might be a 2is. now if you shot 72 for 20 rounds at a really hard course then you will be a 0 or maybe even better. it takes a lot of things into account when the computer figures it out

My dad says you take your average score for 10 18-hole games, then subtract 72 from that, and then take 80% of that, and that's your handicap.

For example: 87 - 72 = 15
15 x .80 = 12

That would be a 12 handicap

For the 9 millionth time, your handicap has absolutely nothing to do with par. I don't know why the same people keep saying it does.

If you want to know your handicap just for curiosity, use an on-line tracker. Search for 'golf handicap tracker'.

If you need it to play in official tournaments, you need to sign up at a local golf club. Most courses (even public courses) sponsor a club where you can get an official handicap.

Your handicap is based on the course rating (how difficult the course is for an expert) and slope rating (how difficult it is for a "bogey golfer").

Take your score (Y), subtract the course rating (C), multiply by 113 (slope for a course of average difficulty), then divide by the slope rating (S).

H = (Y - C) * 113 / S

Do that for your most recent 20 scores, take the 10 lowest values, compute the average, then take 96% of that number, and you'll have your handicap

The USGA web site should have information as to the method for calculating the golf handicap, It has already been discussed on Yahoo numerous times . Take the best 10 of your last 20 scores. Add the total. Subtract the par for the 10 rounds. Take 1/10th of the difference . Multiple that result by the factor ( course slope/ 113 ). Take that result and multiply by .96. That is the official handicap calculating method.
